Yanni last played a concert here in 2012 and it was a case of the same old same old. Except for the fact that he had cut his hair and shaved off his moustache, of course.
Yiannis Hrysomallis was born in Greece in 1954. As a young boy he taught himself how to play piano and began to compose his own songs even though he could not read or write music. Yanni went to school in the United States and after school he moved to Los Angeles. There he formed his own band, which included John Tesh, and they began to play gigs.
In 1992 he released his eighth album, “Dare to Dream”, which received a Grammy nomination as did his follow up album, “In My Time”. Commercial success came with the release of “Yanni Live at the Acropolis”. Released in 1994 it was his first live album and featured a full orchestra. The show was also filmed and shown on television in 65 different countries to roughly half a billion people. The DVD has sold over 7 million copies and is the second best selling music video of all time. After the Acropolis Yanni went on to perform in The Forbidden City and at the Taj Mahal.
Yanni’s music has been called New Age, but he prefers the label of Contemporary Instrumental.
