The music is what it has always been about with this band. Seeing them live gives you the opportunity to hear what great musicians they are. You can hear how tight Petty and the Heartbreakers have become after having played together for almost four decades. Guitar riffs fly back and forth with drummer Steve Ferrone providing a pounding backdrop. As you are listening you’ll realize how effortlessly they have moved from genre to genre over the course of their career. While they do have their own sound they are not afraid to incorporate their influences into their work. Stylistically the band swings from rock to country to blues. The band has dabbled several different genres over the years. Petty and the band are masters of simplicity in regards to music, but still making it compelling.
Formed in 1976 in Gainesville, Florida, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have been at this music thing for almost forty years. Somtimes they Petty has gone off and done some solo stuff, but he always returns to his first band. Line-up changes in the band have been few and far between demonstrating that these guys really like playing together. That comes through in their music. They have long been considered at the forefront of heartland music in the US alongside Bruce Springsteen. Most of their music has a classic rock sound coupled with lyrics pertaining to blue collar issues.
