Born in Texas, educated in Ohio, moved to California briefly and now residing in New York City, Jay Brannan has lived in different parts of the United States over his 32 years. In California he “found” himself. Being from a conservative Baptist family he was only able to turn to the arts when away from them. At first he started off down the path as an actor getting his first big break in the film Shortbus and then Holding Trevor. Not really able to make a living at it he took a job as a proofreader.
After making a little money by contributing a song to one of the film he worked on Brannan began to focus on music. He began to use YouTube, MySpace and Blogspot to get his music out there. Soon people were taking notice of the unsigned artist. In 2007 he released an EP and then in 2008 on his own label his first full album called Goddamned. His second album, In Living Cover, followed shortly in 2009.
He is a tenor who has had his voice compared to that of an angel. Brannan has also been compared to mostly female singers like Sinead O’Connor, Liz Phair, Tracy Chapman, Ani DeFranco, and Lisa Loeb. The singer-songwriter’s songs are mostly sad and/or angry. There is no debating he instills much honesty in his music.
