Since appearing on the Disclosure track “Latch” in 2012 Sam Smith has been the bright star in the male solo pop category of music. He followed up his “Latch” success with a featured vocalist appearance on Naughty Boy’s single “La La La” in 2013. That song went to number one and a star was introduced on the scene.
With his incredible vocal range and tender lyrics Sam Smith has been dubbed the male version of Adele. After winning both the 2014 BRIT Critics’ Choice Award and BBC’s Sound of 2014 poll he released his debut album in May 2014 entitled In the Lonely Hour. As series of hit singles soon ensued. “Lay Me Down”, “Money on My Mind”, “Stay With Me”, “I’m Not the Only One”, and “Like I Can” were all Top 10 hits on the UK charts. International success came soon after. His breakout year did not end there. In December 2014 he received 6 Grammy Award nominations including Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
Sam Smith was born on May 19, 1992 (he is a tender 22-years-old) in London, England. At an early age he went into musical theatre. He then studied jazz singing and songwriting. Then moved on to operatics and was part of Cantate Youth Choir. Obviously drawn to music Smith has listed Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, and the aforementioned Adele as his influences. That would explain where he got his big voice from.
