One of the most successful and beloved Canadian bands hails from Kingston, Ontario and they are The Tragically Hip. They will be rolling into Montreal to play an outdoor gig along the Lachine Canal this weekend.
They are an example of a band that is huge in Canada but has hardly made a ripple anywhere else. Strange because they play that accessible, middle of the road type of rock that usually appeals to the masses. Together since early 80s and led by charismatic frontman Gord Downie, the Hip has won plenty of Juno Awards, were inducted into the Canadian Rock Hall of Fame in 2005, have a star on the Canadian Walk of Fame, have sold out concerts across the county, have sold millions of albums, and have won the prestigious Governor General’s Performing Arts Award. They are even more loveable (to me anyways) because of the fact that they in 1993 established a yearly tour/festival called Another Roadside Attraction, which promotes Canadian bands.
This show is presented as part of the festival Montreal en Lumiere. Each Tragically Hip show is different with Gord Downie going wherever the spirit moves him. Full of energy and jerky dance moves he is mesmerizing to watch. Downie coupled with the Hip’s strong songs always equals fantastic live shows.
