The biggest Canadian comedian working today is Russell Peters. Born in Toronto 44 years ago he began performing stand up in 1989. He first started in the Toronto area then went on to perform all over the world in places like Australia, United States, Lebanon, and South Africa.
As his career grew so did the accolades with Gemini nominations, Canadian Television Awards and even was nominated as the Best Male Comic at Canadian Comedy Awards. Peters has hosted the Juno Awards for two years and has had his own stand up special on Comedy Central. He has even signed with Fox to star in a sitcom based on his life in Canada. This guy is going places.
Much of his material has to do with him being of Anglo-Indian descent and issues of class and culture. He is not the type of comedian who tells jokes, rather his humour is based on his observations of life. Enjoy his latest tour called Almost Famous.
