Not to Be Missed – Shazamfest 2015

shazamfest 2015We all know that summer is the time of festivals in Montreal, but also be aware that there is fun to be had in the form of festivals happening outside of the city.  For the 10th year in the Eastern Townships, Barnston West (20 kms. southwest of Magog) to be more precise, Shazamfest is taking place.  Shazamfest bills itself as an underground Vaudeville festival.  Interest peaked?  Read on!

Hop in your car as it is just a short drive to the location.  Totally worth it as where else could you get live music, wrestling, skateboarding, circus, burlesque, craft workshops, and camping all in one delightful bundle?  Besides all the laughs and enjoyment you will get from the entertainment there is also an ecological side to the festival.  The location is an eco-conscious, family run organic farm surrounded by nature.  Attendees are able to camp there for free if they so desire.  All the food and refreshments being served are locally-sourced, so they have all angles covered to make this as green an event as possible.  They even offer a 20% discount for anyone who arrives on their bike.  Putting their money where their mouth is, in other words.

There will be pretty much non-stop music happening all (long) weekend from acts like Canadian alt hip hop act Buck 65, blues/punk from the one man band Bob Log III, a mélange of rap and magic from Socalled, Lemon Bucket Orkestra bring their blend of gypsy punk, electro-reggae veteran Face-T, and Quebecois folk courtesy of Les Chiens du Ruelle.

If that isn’t enough to entice you then there is also circus arts from LaboKracBoom, laughs courtesy of filmmaker and laughologist Albert Nerenberg, Valoiz Boyz and Casey McDonald will perform all kinds of skateboarding tricks, and family oriented workshops by Clowns Without Borders.  Plus more!

To top off the celebration entrance on Sunday, July 12th is free in celebration of the festival’s 10th birthday. Now you have absolutely no reason not to attend.  Bring your friends, family and kids.
