The festival season in Montreal just keeps going and going. This time it is Just for Laughs. Just for Laughs has been going for years and it just keeps getting bigger and better. It is one of, if not the, biggest comedy festivals in the world. Great discoveries have been made here like Jerry Seinfeld, Tim Allen and Ray Romano. Within the comedy world comedians die to play this festival because they know it can make (or break) their careers. Each year they offer you some of the biggest names in comedy alongside some of the up and coming new talent. The Just for Laughs festival is just like a box of chocolates as you never know what you are going to get.
As for the big names coming to the festival this year there is a headliner show at the Bell Centre by Kevin Hart, ten (and counting) shows by Dave Chappelle, Emmy Award winner Margaret Cho, Canadian star Mike Myers, star of Glee Jane Lynch, Broadway performer and star of How I Met Your Mother Neil Patrick Harris, Broadway star and star of The Good Wife Alan Cumming, stand-up comedian extraordinaire and actress Wanda Sykes, and actor Sir Patrick Stewart. Then there are comedians for you to discover like Ellie Kemper of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt fame, Moshe Kasher – named by Variety as one of the comedians to watch out for, hot new Aussie stand-up Joel Creasey, and ranter extraordinaire Eddie Pepitone.
Besides the comedy there is always stuff going on outside and at Place des Festivals. There are free concerts from the likes of Wyclef Jean and Weird Al Yankovic as well as circus acts (beware there are clowns), street dancing, and sideshow stuff. Plus the usual Twins Parade, Gags screening and Vintage Car Parade. To fill your stomach there will be an area with food trucks. To get your drink on there will be several terrasses set up. In other words, they have all bases covered.
Not everything at Just for Laughs is going to set you back a ton either. In collaboration with Zoofest (www.zoofest.com) there are some Off-JFL shows running at around $20-$25. Plus there is the last minute ticket booth located at the corner of Ste. Catherine and Jeanne Mance.
