It seems like lately here in Montreal we have gotten a little spoiled with all the top notch soccer we have gotten to see. With the Women’s U20 and World Cup on top of the Champions League and Montreal Impact games our cup is fuller than usual. Now this weekend we get more soccer of high class when the prestigious French club Trophée des Champions takes place at Saputo Stadium.
Paris St. Germain is one of the big clubs of French football and they will be competing for the trophy against Olympique Lyonnais, another big time club. The two have won 50 league titles between them with PSG winning 26 and Olympique 24. This is the 20th time the Trophée des Champions, awarded to a Ligue 1 side, has been contested with these two sides winning 11 out of 20. This is a rare occurrence as it is only the third time the two top clubs are competing for the trophy.
As they are both big time clubs each has players to look out for. On Paris St. Germain’s roster you have: 30-year-old Brazilian defender Thiago Silva, 32-year-old Italian defender Thiago Motta, 28-year-old Argentinian forward Edison Cavani, 33-year-old Swedish forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and 28-year-old Brazilian defender David Luiz. On Olympique Lyonnais’s roster you have: 27-year-old Burkina Faso defender Bakary Koné, 22-year-old French midfielder Nabil Fekir and 24-year-old French forward Alexandre Lacazette.
