Tennis Canada has been presenting a high level tennis tournament in Montreal and Toronto since 1981. The tournament itself has been presented in one form or another since 1881. In other words this is no Johnny come lately kinda tournament. It is played on hard court and is considered a Masters 1000 for the men and a Premier 5 tournament for the women, which means it is one of the highest paying for the winners in the world. It is also an important warm-up for the final Grand Slam tournament of the season, the U.S. Open.
As they change between men and women each year between Montreal and Toronto we in Montreal get the men on odd years and the women on even, so 2015 sees the men come to Uniprix Stadium for 10 days of exciting tennis.
As it is an important tournament with the reputation of being well-run we tend to get a high percentage of the top ranked players in the world. For the men, previous champions have included Bjorn Borg, Andre Agassi, Ivan Lendl, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal. The defending champion is Frenchman, Jo Wilfreid Tsonga, who is back to defend his title. This year loads of big names are in Montreal like Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Kei Nishikori, Tomas Berdych, and Stan Wawrinka. Canadian hopes will be represented by Frank Dancevic, Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil.
