Sometimes it is inexplicable as to why one thing be it a song or a painting or a movie is more popular than another, but when it comes to an opera like Madama Butterfly it is obvious. Puccini hit a homerun with this one. All the elements in it are just superior. The music is big and emotional hitting you right in the heart and soul. A love story that is told passionately through the notes of the music. So much so that you can watch it or listen to it over and over and still be affected every time. You will cry, laugh and be touched. Then there is that famous aria. Wow!
The story happens in Japan in the 20th century. An American naval officer has had a marriage arranged between himself and a Japanese young woman called Butterfly. She gives up her beliefs to be with this man. He goes off and she stays waiting for him. It has been so many years that his ship has not returned and the money has dwindled. Things are complicated by the fact that Butterfly has had a child. No one has the heart to tell her that the American has re-married. When he finally does return with his new wife Kate you know things are not going to end well.
