David Seville (Jason Lee – from television’s My Name is Earl) is a struggling songwriter who becomes the surrogate father and stage manager to a musical act. This is a very special music trio in that they are three chipmunks named Alvin (Justin Long – Live Free or Die Hard, Accepted), Theodore (Jesse McCartney – Horton Hears a Who!) and Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler – RV, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou).
The chipmunks find themselves in Los Angeles after the tree they live in gets chopped down. They have to adjust to living in the modern world and a big city. After overcoming their hyperness, especially Alvin, David is able to see that a trio of singing/talking chipmunks can be a huge success for him and his career.
Once that success comes David and the chipmunks have to deal with David unscrupulous record executive (David Cross – Kung Fu Panda, I’m Not There), Ian. Ian tries to loosen David’s control over the chipmunks so he can exploit them for his own gain. David has to try and save his boys before they become another show business disaster.
Kids will love the zany antics of the chipmunks, who never met trouble they haven’t got in to. Adults watching the film will love the feeling of nostalgia they get. It is a fun film for all ages.
