The Graboids are back and they are more deadly than ever. Or at least that is what director Don Michael Paul (Sniper: Legacy, Half Past Dead) would like you to believe. What I am here to tell you is that Tremors 5 (who knew there were that many of them?!?) should be filed under the “I am in the mood for a mindless and cheesy action/monster film” category in your library.
The inhabitants of a reserve in South Africa are under attack. Not from humans or the wildlife there, rather from Graboids. Graboids are man eaters and attack from underground so you don’t see it coming. Famous hunter/tracker Burt Gummer (Michael Gross – from television’s Family Ties) is flown over to hunt down the creatures. A videographer named Travis (Jamie Kennedy) tags along to record the hunt.
Diehard fans and fans of B movies are the ones who might find something to really appreciate here. Fans of the first four films have come this far and will likely persevere until the end. Though this is a rather cheap version of the original which did have some redeeming qualities. That is not to say that it is all bad here. The special effects are pretty impressive. Most of the scenes with the monsters are rather believable. Lead Michael Gross, who is no spring chicken though you would not know that watching him in this film, gives it everything he has got. As with other films in this series the quips come fast and furious with plenty of pop culture references and jokes about other films like Aliens, Die Hard and Jurassic Park.
