Cinemania 2015 Wrap-Up

The 21st edition of CINEMANIA ended Sunday evening with the presentation before a jam packed crowd at the Imperial Theatre. Un + Une was the closing film and the last by famous French director Claude Lelouch. This edition has reached a new record attendance exceeding the expectations of the festival team. Attendance has increased by 27% over the previous year.

THE SENSE OF WONDER directed by Eric Besnard earned the Grand Prize Mel Hoppenheim, main award given at the festival since its inception in 1998. This poignant film follows Louise, a mother raising her two children since the death of her husband. One night later, returning from the market, she runs over a young man on the road home. Afflicted with Asperger’s autism, he quickly proves different from most people and his sense of wonder could change the life of Louise and her family. This light romantic comedy stars Virginia Efira and Benjamin Lavernhe.


Among the seven eligible films the TFO Audience Award was awarded to JOURNEY THROUGH CHINA directed by Zoltan Mayer. CINEMANIA attendees have chosen this film as their favorite. The film was premiered in North American by CINEMANIA. Talented Belgian actress Yolande Moreau plays the lead role. She turned in a highly realistic performance of a mother who goes to China to recover the body of her son, who died in a car accident. Immersed in a culture that is totally foreign to him, she suddenly realizes that this journey is being taken in the footsteps of her son and it triggers a search for self rejuvenating despite all the  grief she is feeling.


After attending festivals in Cannes, Berlin, Venice and Toronto, the CINEMANIA selections in 2015 was comprised of 44 films including 40 premieres, three tribute films and three documentaries.

At the Imperial Cinema, several guests have attended the festival: the guest of honor actress Françoise Fabian, producer and actress Julie Gayet, director Philippe Le Guay, actors Antonythasan Jesuthasan, Ariane Ascaris and Syrus Shahidi, filmmakers Guillaume and Stéphane Malandrin, director and actor Mathieu Busson and producers Dominique Besnehard LakhdarHamina and Tarek. These artists have screened their films and have generously participate in exchanges with Montreal audiences.

The 22nd edition of CINEMANIA Film Festival will be held from 3 to 13 November, 2016.
