In 2002 when Vanessa Carlton’s first album, Be Not Nobody, came out the first single “A Thousand Miles” shot her to the top of the charts. The song earned her three Grammy Award nominations. I’m sure she thought the hits and commercial success would continue, but it didn’t. Her subsequent albums including the 2007 release, Heroes and Thieves, did not sell well. This led to some time away from music and a then a move to Nashville to reevaluate her career and what type of music she wanted to record and release.
With the guidance of her friend and fellow musician, Stevie Nicks, Vanessa Carlton began writing and releasing new music. This time without the aid of a big label; she released an album and an EP independently. This past October she released her fifth album, Liberman.
Since the beginning of her career over a decade ago, Vanessa Carlton has been trying to demonstrate that she is much more than the song “A Thousand Miles”. Though the piano still plays a central part in her music it is much more than piano pop. Liberman is filled with artsy and dream inspired stuff. She is definitely leaning more towards quirky now.
