Written by Anana Rydvald, directed by Zach Fraser and presented by Level 4 Theatre, Love, Child is a one-person play about motherhood, forgiveness, religion, abandonment, the past and today. The performance involves the unique, lighthearted and ingenious use of masks. It is a tale of finding joy amidst the pain.
We travel through time and space in Love, Child moving through different decades like the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s up to the present as well as traveling from upstate New York to a little village in Northern Sweden and finally on to Stockholm. Through this we get to see 30 years of Lina’s life from a teenager right up until she is on the cusp of becoming a mother herself. Lina’s life not only shows us her experiences, but introduces us to several other women like her Buddhist, hippie mom Magda, her extremely religious grandmother, her younger sister who has to deal with an eating disorder as well as an addiction to video games, and finally the stay-at-home mom next door. It is all about a woman who is trying to find her way in the world against all odds.
Using the masks the serious material covered here is done with plenty of humour despite all the sorrow that occurs in Lina’s life. Focusing on the fact that even within darkness we can always find light. How to forgive and move on.
