Fletch – Blu-ray Edition

fletch blu rayIrwin ‘Fletch’ Fletcher (Chevy Chase – National Lampoon’s Vacation, Caddyshack) works as an investigative newspaper reporter who is always taking on a new identity or disguise during his investigations.

In the course of working on a drug story he stumbles upon an insurance scam where a husband, Alan Stanwyk (Tim Matheson – Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Story of Us), hires Fletch, thinking he is a junkie, to kill him as he claims to have a terminal illness and is too scared to commit suicide. Stanwyk claims to want to do it so his wife, Gail (Dana Wheeler-Nicholson – Fast Food Nation, The Little Drummer Girl) can collect the insurance money.

Due his investigative reporter instincts, Fletch smells something fishy and begins to investigate. He finds out that Stanwyk does not have cancer and is somehow related to the drug dealing he has been investigating.

The chase is on as Fletch tries to get to the bottom of things, falls for Gail and is trying to get his drug dealing story written all at the same time.

If you are into the old style Saturday Night Live type humour filled with kooky disguises, quick one-liners, insults, and sight gags then check out Fletch. Chevy Chase was in the prime of his physical talent at comedy when the film was made in the 80s, so he is on the ball for this one. You certainly have to be a fan of Chase’s to enjoy the film as you have to love his style of comedy or it will be a little painful for you.

It is the type of film that if you watch it over and over new lines or jokes will appear before your very eyes. This is due to the fact that Michael Ritche’s (The Golden Child, The Bad News Bears) film is wall-to-wall jokes so that you sometimes miss some as you are laughing.

If you do enjoy this film do not make the mistake of buying/streaming the sequel as it was in no way as good as the first.
