You Can Move to This – Ellie Goulding

ellie goulding live 2016229-year-old Ellie Goulding exploded out of the gates in her native England.  It took a bit longer for her to catch on here.  Goulding released her debut album Lights in 2010 in the U.K. and it was a massive hit.  It garnered her the BBC’s Sound Of… and the Critics Choice Award at the Brit Awards in 2010.  After being the only act to be asked to sing live at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, she released her album in the U.S. in 2011.  It was ignored in the beginning and then the single “Lights” began a slow climb to the top of the Billboard charts that lasted a year and a half.  It ended up being one of the biggest pop songs of 2012.

With that long road it seemed like she released her follow-up album back-to-back to her debut.  Halcyon was released in October of 2012.  It debuted at number 9 on the Billboard album chart.  Where the first album had a more electronic pop sound to it, Halcyon is more of a straight pop album.  The lead single “Anything Could Happen” has done well on the charts and then “Burn” did even better.

A massive breakthrough came with the single from the film 50 Shades of Grey called “Love Me Like You Do”.  The single was number 1 in 70 countries.  In short order she released her third album, Delirium. It has spawned the singles “Army”, “On My Mind” and “Something in the Way You Move”.

Ellie Goulding has done plenty of touring in her few years in the music industry.  She has toured with Katy Perry, John Mayall, and Skrillex and has performed sets at festivals like Glastonbury, Osheaga, iTunes Festival, T in the Park, V Festival, Lollapalooza, and Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

What sets Ellie Goulding apart from many female pop artists today is her voice.  She uses it very much like an instrument.  Playing with it to make different sounds.  She is a soprano, but has a very high pitched vibrato that she uses as well as a raspy quality that makes it very interesting to listen to.
