Brothers Dean (played by Jensen Ackles) and Sam (played by Jared Padalecki) are a formidable creature fighting duo. Also when they are working together it makes the show better and this season goes a long way towards proving that claim. Another reason that this can be slotted into the stronger season category is that there are some fun returning of characters, strong new characters/foes, interesting twists and shows that come from different characters perspectives.
At its core this series is a story about two brothers and that they are descendants from a long line of hunters. Not just any kind of hunters but ones that battle against creatures and try to halt an oncoming apocalypse. Of the God vs. Satan variety. Their mother was killed and they are set upon the avenging her death path. Reoccurring themes are family, sacrifice and heroism. In other words, it knows how to hit all the high points in order to keep you interested.
The weaker point of the series is that due to some lackadaisical writing after a while it seems like you are watching the same episode over and over. It is so similar that all of it begins to melt into one.
This season the brothers have to deal with a powerful foe recently released called the darkness. Plus they are searching for Amara (played by Emily Swallow), who is now a young woman, who is herself searching for God (played by Rob Benedict) and Lucifer (played by Misha Collins).
