Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising – Blu-ray Edition

Despite the fact that the first film was rather awful you knew after it made $150 million that there was going to be a sequel. Well, here it is and it is not an improvement upon the first. They have just swapped out a fraternity and replaced it with a sorority and pressed repeat.

New parents Mac (played by Seth Rogan) and Kelly (played by Rose Byrne) have decided that it is time to move to a bigger house in a better neighbourhood as they are expecting another child, so they put their house up for sale. Just as they decide to do that and are getting ready to show the house a party-hardy sorority moves in next door. Who will want to move in there now? Desperate Mac turns to his former nemesis Teddy (played by Zac Efron) for help.

The idea of co-writers Rogan and his partner-in-crime Evan Goldberg have gone with is to pile in as many infantile and crass jokes or sight gags in as humanly possible in the hope that at least some of them will stick or make us laugh. A lot of what Rogan and Rose Byrne do is funny but what happens next door at the sorority will just make you roll your eyes and sigh.

neighbors-2-blu-ray-editionWhat I did find interesting was the social consciousness that peeked out from under all the pratfalls and crude jokes. There were some lessons to be learned in regards to feminism and sexism.  Sharp observations about the different standards men and women are held to crop up. Courtesy of Zac Efron’s willingness to poke fun at his own type of celebrity there are also some astute observations about modern day man. The fears of getting older, being no fun and losing their looks/body are touched upon. So, in other words, you have to really get deep into this forest to see the trees.
