It is about time! For the first time Montreal’s women’s professional hockey team, Les Canadiennes, will play a home game at the Bell Cenre. Here’s to hoping that we fill the place up and carry our ladies on to victory.
Les Canadiennes have been around for 10 years but grew to a higher profile in 2015 because they signed a partnership with the Montreal Canadiens and drafted probably the best all-around female hockey player today, Marie-Philip Poulin. A game like this will go a long way towards inspiring young girls to see that they can play hockey at the Bell Centre and will grow the game at the grass roots level. Now they are looking to move on to the next level of exposure and success.
The Montreal organization has always been a strong one winning one. They have won a couple of league titles are came up just short last season. These are the two teams that were in the Clarkson Cup final last season with the Calgary Inferno winning 8-3.
A game like this gives Montrealers a chance to see some of the best female hockey players in the world up close. Montreal’s roster includes Poulin, Caroline Ouellette, goalie Charline Labonté, Lauriane Rougeau, and Julie Chu. Calgary has Hayley Wickenheiser, Brianne Jenner, Hayley Irwin, Rebecca Johnston, and Meaghan Mikkelson.
