Getting together in 1995 in Glasgow, Scotland, this five-piece rock band has gone on to become one of that country’s best known musical exports. Using long guitar sections, plenty of distortion and melodic bass sections the band has carved out a place all their own in the music world.
Movie buffs and fans of films from the 80s will recognize that they took their name from creatures in the film Goonies. They list their influences as Sonic Youth, Pixies, The Cure, and My Bloody Valentine. With their very sparse sound they struggled to gain an audience in the beginning. People seem a little thrown when they don’t have lyrics to sing along with. After a couple of albums their music began to click with people in the UK, but over on this side of the Atlantic it was a harder sell.
The Scottish band released their 9th studio album this year entitled Every Country’s Sun. It finds the band’s sound maturing and even slightly softening. It still sounds like an expansive score to a film so fans will be able to find what they have always liked about the band in it.
