Outlander: The Complete First Season – Blu-ray Edition

Time traveling and period piece are not two things that usually go together and yet in this series shot in Scotland and based on the series of novels by American author Diana Gabaldon they go together like hand in glove. Picture it a woman just coming out of World War II and being ripped away from her husband and the world she knows after touching the wrong stones in a field and being transported back to the early 18thcentury in Scotland. Talk about a fish out of water!

Everything is heightened in the first season of Outlander. The drama and sensuality is all amped up. If they are fighting you are tense. If they are making love you feel the passion. All of it really makes you aware of the rough, cruel and oftentimes violent life that was occurring in Scotland for most Highlanders during this era.  Special attention has been paid to making it all seem as realistic as it possibly can be. It all has an authentic feel to it whether it be language, costumes, sets or even food they are eating.

World War II combat nurse Claire Randall (played by Caitriona Balfe), a Brit, has just come back home in 1945 and joins up with her husband Frank Randall (played by Tobias Menzies) after rarely seeing each other over the past five years. An attempt at a second honeymoon in Scotland, where Frank is researching his family history, is suddenly and mysteriously interrupted when Claire goes missing.

Claire has gone off on her own to investigate an area in which they had seen druids worshiping and while there she touches one of the large stones. Suddenly she is whisked back in time to 1743 Scotland. Soon she makes acquaintance with one of Frank’s ancestors, Captain Jack Randall (played by Tobias Menzies), and a handsome Scot named Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughen). These two men are going to play an important part in her life for the foreseeable future. That is until she can figure out a way to return to 1945.

Each episode is almost one hour long and at least one edge of your seat moment happens. Even fans of the books will find plenty to keep their interest. It is so well done that even if you know what is going to happen next you won’t be bored.
