1983 was the year that the rock band the Melvins started. Hailing from the state of Washington, they are a trio made up of Buzz Osbourne (vocals/guitar), Dale Crover (drums) and as of 2015 Steven Shane McDonald (bass). They took their name from a manager at a Safeway store whom everyone hated and they thought it was an annoying enough name.
Soundwise the band has been considered part of the grunge, punk rock and metal genres. Though they have flirted with country, jazz, and ambient. They have varied their sound over their 35 years. Within it you can hear the influence of bands like Butthole Surfers, Kiss, Alice Cooper, and Black Flag. Their sludgy sound was a heavy influence on the grunge sound of the 90s by bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden.
