Rise of the Guardians – Blu-ray Edition

One of the fun parts of childhood is the wonder and belief in magical entities.  Children believe with their whole hearts in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and the Sandman.  In Dreamworks latest animated feature Rise of the Guardians Jack Frost is introduced as an addition to that roster.

Santa Claus (Alec Baldwin – from television’s 30 Rock) has a bad feeling in his stomach and the big man’s stomach never lets him down. Worried about what he sees on his Earth globe he summons the other Guardians.  After he tells them that there is potential danger in the form of Pitch (Jude Law – Closer, Sherlock Holmes).  Pitch is the entity that kids worldwide known as the Boogieman.  He brings fear and bad dreams to kids and he wants to take over the control of all kids on Earth

To the shock of each of the Guardians and to the newest member himself, the Man in the Moon has selected Jack Frost (Chris Pine – Star Trek, Unstoppable) to join the roster of the Guardians.  Jack Frost has an incredibly low profile so low that kids cannot see him and the others doubt his responsibility level and commitment to kids.  Even the generally positive Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher – Wedding Crashers, Rango) is doubtful though she does think he is cute.

Besides the pressure of being the newest member at a time when kids are at risk due to a threat by Pitch, Jack Frost is also going through his own stuff.  He does not have any memories of when he was a kid and alive, so he is unsure of why he was selected to be what he is and where he should be heading.  All these distraction make protecting the hopes and dreams of kids all that much more difficult.

The team at Dreamworks brings forth all these characters and plays on all our preconceived notions about them.  For example, the Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman – Les Miserables, X-Men) is a 6’1”, Aussie, boomerang carrying gruff warrior.  The new twists to each of these very familiar characters ups the interesting factor.  Part of the credit has to go to the actors who voice the characters.  Each brings a bunch to them.  Alec Baldwin is hilarious as Santa Claus with a Russian accent.  Jude Law is incredibly creepy, but smooth at the same time as the villain Pitch.  Isla Fisher brings cuteness to the Tooth Fairy and Hugh Jackman is perfect as the rough and tumble Easter Bunny.

For adults watching this film won’t be a chore that you have to endure with your kids.  There is a wonderful story there that will have tears in your eyes at different points and will bring you back to many of the feelings you had as a kid.  The magic of animation at its best in that it transports you to another time in your life at the same time it entertains you.

Rise of the Guardians, which was nominated for Best Animated Film at this year’s Oscars, has a little bit of everything.  There is action, heartwarming moments, humour, and even some dark moments.
