Brooklyn’s Halsey Street Station Became the Stage Name for This Artist

23-year-old Ashley Frangipang goes under the stage name Halsey and released her debut album in 2015. She identifies her music as electro pop or indie pop.

The singer/songwriter began writing songs at the ripe old age of 17. Though she started a whole lot earlier beginning at a very young age by playing the cello, violin and viola. Then she moved on to teaching herself to play acoustic guitar at the age of 14. Then, as many do nowadays, she began posting videos on YouTube and gained a following there. Around the age of 16 she was diagnosed as bipolar. At the age of 18 she went through some financial problems and music became a way for her to pay her rent.

After releasing an EP and then toured with The Kooks in 2014. She began writing songs for her first album while on the road. After a performance at South by Southwest she became the most talked about act there. Finally the concept album Bandlands was released in 2015 and Halsey described it as an “angry female” record. Her sophomore release came about in 2017 and was entitled Hopeless Fountain Kingdom. It has been described as a more radio friendly album.
