Jamaican Reggae Group Toots and the Maytals

Originally known as The Maytals this Jamaican reggae group was formed in the early 1960s.  Since that time they have commonly been recognized as key figures in the popularization of reggae music.  In 1968 their song “Do the Reggay” was the first song to use the word reggae.  It was responsible for introducing the genre to the general public.  They had big hits with songs like “Pressure Drop”, “Sweet and Dandy”, “Monkey Man”, and “54-46 (That’s My Number)” leading to them becoming international stars.

The voice of their lead singer Toots Hibbert has been compared with that of Otis Redding; it is that soulful.  As such he was named one of the Top 100 singers by Rolling Stone magazine.  The backbone of the band when he was jailed in the late 60s due to drug (marijuana) possession the band all but stopped operating.

During the 80s the band broke up and then were reformed in the 90s with a different line-up. They have worked with the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, No Doubt, Shaggy, and The Roots.
