The year was 1998 and British cartoonist Jamie Hewlett of Tank Girl fame got together with Damon Albarn of the band Blur and Gorillaz was born. This musical project is not just based upon churning out music, but also is comprised of the creation of a fictional universe made up of a virtual band featuring comic book characters.
The virtual band is made up 2D on lead vocals, Noodle on guitar, Murdoc Niccals on bass, and Russell Hobbs on drums. A collaboration between several musicians produces the music part of the equation. The debut album, “Gorillaz”, was released in 2001 and sold millions of copies. Their second release in 2005 “Demon Days” was an equally huge hit that spurned singles like “Dirty Harry” and “Feel Good Inc”. This album received 5 Grammy nominations and won them one for Best Pop Collaborations with Vocals. Gorillaz has been named by The Guinness Book of World Records as the most successful virtual reality band ever.
The band is now touring on the back of their sixth release, The Now Now, which was released in 2018. The current tour features a lineup that includes Albarn along with Remi Kabaka Jr., Mike Smith, Jeff Wootton, Seye Adelekan, Jesse Hackett, Karl Van den Bossche, and Gabriel Wallace.
