Of all the major sports the one that Montreal has never had a team in is the NBA. Besides traveling to American cities to see the best professional basketball players ply their trade the only opportunity has sprung up over the past couple of years in which the Toronto Raptors have come to the Bell Centre to play a pre-season game dubbed the NBA Canada Series. Yes, it is not a real game, but it is as close as we are going to get for the foreseeable future. Plus over the past few seasons the Raptors have been a good team worth spending money to see play. The Toronto Raptors are the only Canadian team in the NBA.
Last season the Raptors played the Washington Wizards. The Raptors won that game against this tough oppontent. A team that knocked the Raptors out of the playoffs two seasons ago in the first round, so there were some axes to grind. This year will be another Eastern rival – the Brooklyn Nets.
On each team there are players worth the price of your ticket. On the Nets they have young point guard Shabazz Napier, point guard D’Angelo Russell, forward Joe Harris, power forward Kenneth Farried, forward Jared Dudley, forward and former Raptor DeMarre Carroll, and guard Allen Crabbe.
The Raptors are coming off back-to-back strong seasons, but disappointing playoffs. They are once again a strong team and should compete for the Atlantic Division title with the Boston Celtics. Several changes in the roster were made over the with the biggest being the trade of star DeMar DeRozen. They added major star in the off season in that trade in Kawhi Leonard, considered a top 5 player in the league. In that trade guard Danny Green also joined the team. They join the core group of point guard Kyle Lowry, power forward Serge Ibaka and center Jonas Valanciunas.
