Synth-Pop Comes at You Courtesy of Years & Years

Olly Alexander (vocals/keyboards), Mikey Goldsworthy and Emre Turkmen got together in 2010 in London, England to form the band Years & Years. After a few years they were signed to Polydor/Interscope. The band’s sound is a combo of synth-pop, electro and R&B. They released their debut album, Communion, in 2015 and it debuted at the top of the UK charts. Singles “Shine”, “Eyes Shut”, “Desire” featuring Tove Lo, and “King” were big hits. Recognition and praise started coming their way starting in January 2015 when they won the BBC Sound of 2015 poll.

After touring and then taking a short break they came right back in 2016 with the release of the single “Meteorite” which was on the Bridget Jones’s Baby soundtrack. Alexander was also in the process of writing the songs for their next album. The album, Palo Santo, was released in the summer of 2018 and so far “Sanctify”, “If You Are Over Me”, “Palo Santo”, and “All For You” have been released as singles.

Lead singer Olly Alexander has become a spokesperson for LGBTQ issues and has also spoken out about mental health issues. The band cites Radiohead, Marilyn Manson, The Beatles, Timbaland, Joni Mitchell, and Rabyn amongst their influences.
