Against all expectations I was rather entertained by this film. Having not seen the original I prematurely dismissed it as another waste of time horror film. You cannot really blame me for the impatience as the genre has not given us many gems of late. Plus it has that look of something which is not going to be good.
Happy Death Day 2U, directed and co-written by Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones), is filled with more light hearted comedy and a few life lessons than it is horror, but that did not bother me.
First we believe that Ryan (Phi Vu – Logan, Pitch Perfect 2) is caught in the same nightmare which our heroine Tree (Jessica Rothe – La La Land, Tater Tot & Patton) was recently caught in. Being killed only to wake up and having the day repeat itself again.
Then we realize it is not Ryan, but Tree who is caught in the deadly nightmare again. The masked killer is back again and begins to terrorize several targets. This time not only does she have her own life to worry about there are also decisions to be made about her mother (Missy Yager – Manchester by the Sea) and possible love interest, Carter (Israel Broussard – To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Extinction).
What I had to appreciate about the film is that it was different. Most horror films today rely solely on gore instead of trying to create tension and some mystery. Here they are attempting a mixture of a kind of Groundhog Day and slasher film.
Bottom line is that if was fun. Funny and filled with fun moments.
