The town of Bricksburg is not exactly a place which is awesome anymore. Today they face a new threat in the form of invaders of the planet Duplo variety. They are from outer space and have undertaken destroying everything they come in contact with.
Citizens of Bricksburg decide to fight back. This fight is undertaken with a vigour and it takes them to the far reaches of the universe. Even one galaxy in which everything is musical. To win they are going to have to be inventive, brave and use their building skills.
Everything was awesome with the first Lego Movie. Not so much so whith number two. Because the first Lego movie was so well received by both critics and moviegoers the second one was highly anticipated. Maybe those expectations hurt the Mike Mitchell (Trolls, Shrek Forever After) directed film. Whatever the case, something just did not work here. Not to disaster level, but certainly enough to make this a disappointment.
There is plenty of talent and name recognition in the voice cast with Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World), Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games, Pitch Perfect 3), Will Arnett (from television’s Arrested Development), Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip, The Secret Life of Pets 2), Nick Offerman (from television’s Parks & Recreation), Maya Rudolph (Brides Maids, Booksmart), Will Ferrell (Blades of Glory, Zoolander 2), Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street, Moneyball), Channing Tatum (Magic Mike, Foxcatcher), and Allison Brie (from television’s Mad Men) all there. Plenty of experienced comedic actors and actresses. Nothing they could do really with this weak story.
Weak in that it is rather thin. Some interesting ideas, but not enough to make a feature with. Too much reliance is placed upon action and too little on fun and story development. It seems like Mitchell is not really sure what type of film he is making. Add to that it is not quite as clever as the original and you have a recipe for disappointment.
