This is where it all began. Many North Americans watched and loved The Office not realizing that is was originally a British television series. Created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, it aired on BBC. Did so well that Americans made their own version.
This is a comedy but not your typical comedy. Incredibly intelligent and witty, The Office will make you laugh though not in the usual way. Not your typical television comedy. It takes the typical office culture head on and turns it on its.
David Brent (played by Ricky Gervais) is the manager at a division of paper company Wernham Hogg. A rather incompetent and inappropriate one. He thinks he is hilarious but isn’t. That does not stop him. Only kiss ass Gareth (played by Mackenzie Crook) finds him amusing. Everyone else like salesman Tim (played by Martin Freeman) and receptionist Dawn (played by Lucy Davis) suffer under his leadership and constant unfunny jokes.
Series one centers around the fact that one of the two divisions of Wernham Hogg will be shut down with the remaining one absorbing the other. Due to redundancies some will lose their jobs. Brent does not want that to happen as, besides all his other flaws, he is quite dedicated to his office.
All characters are different. We have all known people like them. Maybe not so exaggerated but still exist. Showing to reverance to usual boundaries, all jokes are taken too far. Political correctness does not exist in this world.
