TEMPS Ø

ANGEL OF THE NORTH (L’ANGE DU NORD)
Jean-Michel Roux | Finland, France | 2018 | NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE
In the presence of the director JEAN MICHEL ROUX

But what can the The Wounded Angel, the most famous painting in Finland, teach us as it was painted in a psychiatric hospital by Hugo Simberg in 1903? Lovers of fantastic documentaries, thought-provoking films, art, Finnish angels, small peoples (elves, trolls, etc.), magical trees, madness and, more broadly, riddles in all genres this movie is for you. A cinematic essay in the form of a shamanic journey that questions death and perhaps, somewhere, opens the doors to the afterlife. A funny investigation for a film that you will clearly need to talk about afterwards. Think of the documentary style of Werner Herzog, but with Finnish angels and magical trees. By the director of 1000 merveilles de l’univers (famous shoot in Quebec, with Julie Delpy).

NAIL IN THE COFFIN: THE FALL AND RISE OF VAMPIRO
Michael Paszt | Canada | 2019 | CANADIAN PREMIERE
In the presence of IAN “VAMPIRO” HODGKINSON and director MICHAEL PASZT

“The best parts of the fight happens behind the scenes …”, Vampiro said. Celebrated star of the fight for his astonishing destructive punk-rocker character, Vampiro is clearly not afraid of a challenge. Tracing the chaos of a life (abuse of all kinds, in and out of the ring, a henchman for Milli Vanilli, colorful Montreal passage, etc.), this intense portrait oscillates between the most brutal and the most beautiful. He especially captures a survivor, at the time of his biggest fight: the education of his daughter (who lives in Montreal and will be present at the screening).

BIRD TALK
Xawery Zulawski | Poland | 2019 | INTERNATIONAL PREMIERE
In the presence of director XAWERY ZULAWSKY

Xawery Zulawski completed the last film (finalized just before his death) of his father. A two-headed film about the current rise of Western fascism, which redefines the notion of the artist. By means of a family abyss and an amazing set of mirrors, Andrzej Zulawski (Possession, The Important Thing is to Love) comes back to life. From the great Zulawsky, then; but which one? Political, intellectual and very hysterical, Bird Talk turns out to be a film that we unfortunately no longer see, where cinema is an act of resistance that rages in the heart and with a knife in hand.

CRASH
David Cronenberg | Canada | 2019 | CANADIAN PREMIERE
A NEW RESTORED VERSION
In the presence of director DAVID CRONENBERG

Following a road accident, James Ballard discovers an unprecedented sexuality born of the body and flesh. The sunken sides of cars become a matrix of disturbing and poisonous mutants that, from one machine to another, from one body to another, eroticize hematomas, scars, pins and prostheses. A strange beauty of bruised bodies, a frightening mix of scents of sex, blood and gas, along with Howard Shore’s captivating music, Crash sets off in search of an orgasm always postponed. A film that caresses us, but never abandons and that probes, without taboos, our acceptance of this erogenous vibration. The master of inner horror imposes his rough, sublime, gothic and infinitely melancholy diamond.

VIDEOPHOBIA
Daisuke Miyazaki | Japan | 2019 | INTERNATIONAL PREMIERE
In the presence of director DAISUKE MIYAZAKI and actress TOMONA HIROTA

After sex, a young woman discovers that she has been filmed and sees the video circulating on the web. Paranoia goes up, the feeling of injustice too. A descent into hell that causes a sudden terror of video images, but especially the total loss of social references. Beautifully filmed in black and white (reminiscent of both Chris Marker and Noboru Tanaka), the latest Miyazaki (Tourism, Yamato California) film deals with sexual abuse, rape of our image. He appropriately dissects the extent of the traumatic ramifications of such a crime. A film that derails reality from a society under surveillance everywhere. Captivating and scary.
