ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEE

MILE END is pleased to announce that HONEYLAND by Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov is now available on video on demand. Multi-award winner in International festivals, the film received 2 exceptional Academy Awards nominations for Best documentary and Best International Feature Film. Macedonia’s last beekeeper Haditze Muratova is the heart of this documentary about environmental balance.

Nestled in an isolated mountain region deep within the Balkans, Hatidze Muratova lives with her ailing mother in a village without roads, electricity or running water. She’s the last in a long line of wild beekeepers, eking out a living farming honey in small batches to be sold in the closest city –a mere four hours’ walk away. Hatidze’s peaceful existence is thrown into upheaval by the arrival of an itinerant family, with their roaring engines, seven rambunctious children and herd of cattle. Hatidze optimistically meets the promise of change with an open heart, it doesn’t take long however, before a conflict evolves that exposes the fundamental tension between nature and humanity, harmony and discord, exploitation and sustainability.

Haditze
Muratova scales her way along the breathtaking Balkan mountainside to check her
beloved cache of honeybees. She’s the last of the Macedonian wild beekeepers
and lives alone with her ailing mother on a farm unspoiled by electricity or
running water. She survives by selling small-batch honey in a Skopje market, a
mere four-hour walk away. Her peace is happily broken with the arrival of new
neighbours, their herd of cattle and seven kids. She optimistically shares her
one golden rule with the interlopers: take half the honey for yourself, but
leave half for the bees. It doesn’t take long for human nature to take its
course, leaving the hive and Hatidze irrevocably changed.

HONEYLAND is the first feature
directed by Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov. They have both directed
several documentary shorts about sustainability and human rights. HONEYLAND is
a tough and tender portrait of the delicate balance between humankind and
nature, a glimpse at a fast disappearing way of life, and an unforgettable testament
to one extraordinary woman’s resilience.
