Sex Education: Season One

Sex is an emabarrassing enough subject when you are a teenager (and probably well beyond, if we are being completely honest), could you imagine if your mother was a sex therapist?!? Oh the horror!

That is the premise around which this delightful Netflix series revolves. In a small town in the English countryside, Jean Milburn (Gillian Anderson – from television’s The X Files) is a single mother who makes her living as a sex therapist and author. This is much to the chagrin and even horror of her teenage son, Otis (Asa Butterfield – Hugo, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas).

His horror becomes opportunity when the girl he has been pining for, Maeve (Emma Mackey), approaches him with an idea which will have them spend time together as well as make some money. She would bring to him classmates who need sex advice and Otis, who has demonstrated a talent for it, would help them out. Otis has to deal with all this, his growing feelings for Maeve and his meddling mother. His life becomes rather hectic.

All this is rather amusing, especially to Otis’ best friend Eric (Ncuti Gatwa), as Otis is incapable of dealing with sex at all. He cannot even masterbate. As for Eric, he is going through things of his own as a young gay male in a small town. Plus, his best friend, is no longer quite as available to him.

I cannot say enough good things about this series. It is heartfelt, funny, poignant, and smart all at the same time. Its success is that it is able to balance raunchy sex stuff while at the same time grounding itself in sincerity. No easy way outs are taken. Everything is rather complex here. Always with a very human feel to all that happens.

We have all watched teen shows or films which deals with this point in life and the trials and tribulations of discovering sex and they have been awful. This one avoids all the usual pitfalls. Plus all the characters are rather lovable in one way or another. It is of such a calibre that anyone from teens to seniors will enjoy it. Definitely one you will find yourself binging.

The series can be streamed on Netflix.
