Jiu Jitsu

Nicolas Cage. It is almost as if he is totally leaning into the jokes being made about him or the films he makes. Or he does not give a flying fig. Most of the stuff he has been in of late, and by of late I mean for years, has been downright awful. Unwatchable. You can add this film, directed and written by Dimitri Logothetis (Kickboxer: Retaliation, Wings of the Dragon), to the ever growing pile. A pile of films which will pay the bills but will garner you no kind of positive recognition.

Story….which I am not sure I fully followed due to all the nonsense….is concerned with something that happens every six years. An alien invader comes to Earth every six years and wages battle with members of an ancient order of jiu jitsu fighters. When one of the heroes goes down in the battle it seems like it might be lost and with the fate of Earth seems to be in jeopardy.

Hard to follow is actually an understatement. So disjointed pretty much throughout. What I was able to grasp onto kinda led nowhere. Definitely a screenplay that needed more work. Who knows maybe there was something sensical and enjoyable there.

Then there is the awful camerawork. Especially when it comes to the fighting scenes which is a shame as they are really the center of a film like this.

As for Nicolas Cage…well, he is portraying Nicolas Cage.
