Health and safety restrictions imposed by the federal and provincial governments have obliged the Opéra de Montréal to cancel its production of The Marriage of Figaro, with performances planned on May 8, 11, 13, and 16. The Opéra de Montréal will contact all ticketholders to inform them of the next steps.
“This past year has been very difficult for opera companies everywhere. Cancelling a production is a last resort to which we have resigned ourselves with great sadness,” explains Patrick Corrigan, General Director of the Opéra de Montréal. The company will do all it can to look into various possible scenarios that would allow this production to be programmed as part of a future season. Ensuring the health and safety of its artists and creative teams is of the utmost importance for the Opéra de Montréal. “An opera of this scale requires a minimum of 3 months preparation time, so the moment had come for us to make this decision,” continues Mr. Corrigan. Despite the closure of performance venues for the past 12 months now, the company has adapted by developing new ways for audiences to enjoy opera—for example, by continuing its numerous education and outreach activities, and even by webcasting its productions. This is in keeping with the company’s values of accessibility, education, and democratization of the operatic art form.
A 4th WEBCAST COMING UP!
Given the public’s enthusiasm for preceding webcasts and the success of those recently presented (La bohème by Puccini, a double bill consisting of La voix humaine by Poulenc and L’hiver attend beaucoup de moi by Jobidon/St-Onge, and Hänsel und Gretel by Humperdinck), the Opéra de Montréal is pleased to announce that a 4th webcast will take place in the coming weeks. As a great classic of the repertoire, this opera promises to be an unmissable event! Details will be announced shortly on the Opéra de Montréal’s website and social platforms. Bear in mind that, through a subsidy granted by the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications du Québec as part of the Ambition numérique initiative, the Opéra de Montréal is currently working on a project to establish a digital incubator serving the opera sector, which will explore the artistic, communicational, and economic possibilities of making the shift to digital activities.
