Knot from Darkfield Radio

Knot. It is an interesting word, no? Brings about an immediate visual of that pretzel shaped knot. A knot really has no beginning and no end. Such is the twisty idea brought forth by Darkfield Radio in its second season. Darkfield Radio is an app, which you can easily and for free download from Apple or Google Play, which offers listeners a chance at an immersive audio experience.

I have to admit that when I saw Knot being part of the Tribeca Film Festival I was filled with doubts, so I did not indulge. I mean, it claimed to offer you an experience which merely using sound would transport the listener. Since we have become such a tech reliant society I had doubts about this claim as it uses just sound. Boy, was I ever wrong!

Knot is the work of UK based company Darkfield. It involves three episodes which are connected but in a not so obvious way. The three episodes take place over the course of a couple of hours in one evening. To really take full advantage of what is being offered it is suggested that you listen to episode one on a park bench, episode two in the front seat of a car and episode three in the middle of a room in your residence.

With just the sound, the locations and closing your eyes engaging your imagination you will be transported. This really happened for me in the second episode. With eyes closed and the quality of the audio I have to admit I jumped a couple of times thinking someone was right over my shoulder whispering in my ear. The sound quality is amazing. Then there is the sound of the other characters breathing or moving which are so realistic it is incredible. All this works together to make you believe that you are actually part of the story which is unfurling. Truly is a 360 degree sound that they claim to have.

All it requires is your buy in. Close your eyes and allow the audio to take you away. The technology combined with your brain will bring Knot to life. It is recommended that you listen to the three episodes in the recommended locations but if it is not possible due to lack of access, security or weather then you can still enjoy Knot. Just close your eyes. It is also recommended that you wear over the ear style earphones as they will block out the external noises so you can be totally immersed in the audio coming from them.

Season 2 – Knot launched in the U.S. and Canada on June 25, 2021 and is available until September 30, 2021. KNOT will run from 5pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from June 25 to September 30, 2021.
