Antigone sous le soleil de midi: the myth revisited for young people at the Maison Théâtre

from 18 to 28 November 2021

The famous myth revisited for young people by award-winning author Suzanne Lebeau and director Marie-Eve Huot

An unmissable event of this autumn, Antigone sous le soleil de midi will premiere at the Maison Théâtre on November 18th. The duo composed of the author Suzanne Lebeau and the director Marie-Eve Huot has chosen to revisit the famous myth to reveal to audiences from 10 years old all the philosophy and how it relates to current events. With this new play, the award-winning playwright highlights the strength and timeliness of this thousand-year-old narrative, which raises fundamental questions even (if not more!) today, especially for younger generations.

In a sober and sensitive staging, Citlali Germé, Ludger Côté and Sasha Samar will give body and voice to the young Antigone, altruistic and thirsty for justice, her uncle Creon and Corypheus, a narrator who challenges the spectators. The rounded stage, a playground where the power of love and tensions rumble, will unfold as a visual installation with multidisciplinary components. This space of evocation, texts and movements will be punctuated by the drums played live by Nicolas Fortin. A strong and luminous artistic proposal to raise awareness.

About the creators

Internationally recognized as one of the leaders in dramaturgy for young audiences, Suzanne Lebeau is one of Quebec’s most performed authors here and around the world. She has received numerous awards and honours for her work and outstanding theatrical contribution, including the 2009 Governor General’s Literary Award for Le bruit des os qui craquent, the 2010 Athanase-David Award, the 2016 Governor General’s Performing Arts Award, and the title of Companion of the Ordre des arts et des lettres du Québec. She co-founded Le Carrousel, a theatre company in 1975 with Gervais Gaudreault. Since 2016, Marie-Eve Huot, a director passionate about young audiences, has taken the reins of the artistic direction of the Carrousel, alongside Gervais Gaudreault.

An immersive installation to discover

Before or after the performances, the public will be able to discover an installation in the foyer of the Maison Théâtre. Designed by Pierre-Étienne Locas, a sculpture echoing the scenography of the show will be wrapped in a sound environment created by Diane Labrosse and Pierre Tanguay from sounds collected in classes during workshops on the themes of the piece.
