Pau Gasol: It’s About the Journey on Prime Video

A four-part docuseries that focuses on the final chapter of the glorious career enjoyed by Spanish professional basketball player, Pau Gasol. When it comes to Spanish athletes, Gasol is most definitely the most famous and talented basketball player ever. He ranks right up there with the most famous Spanish athletes of all time like Rafael Nadal, Fernando Alonso, Miguel Indurain, Raul, and Sergio Garcia.

He is a legend in the world of international basketball being one of the best players ever. He became the first Spanish player to win two NBA championships and be a part of the NBA All-Star game six times. On top of that, he is also a two-time ACB League champion with FC Barcelona, has won three Olympic medals (two silver and a bronze), won one World Championship, and three European Championships. He was the piston that drove the wheel in what was considered the golden generation of the Spanish National Basketball Team.

The Amazon exclusive series, which is in English and Spanish, focuses on how an elite athlete prepares himself for life after sports. Life after the high of playing at the highest level for around two decades. How the adjustment is planned for and made. The challenges Gasol faces will be both physical and emotional. We see how much he loves playing basketball and the fight he waged until the very end to go out how he wants to.

In 2001 Pau Gasol, born in July of 1980 in Barcelona, Spain. At the age of 21 he decided to make the leap from playing in Spain with his beloved FC Barcelona to the NBA. The seven-footer (7’1″), though flying under the radar of most NBA teams, was drafted third overall by the Atlanta Hawks. Only he never played for them as he was traded immediately to the awful Memphis Grizzlies. Everything from that point on was, as they say, history.

Episode 1 – Pau Gasol’s last NBA game occurred in March 2019. In May of that year, he underwent surgery to repair a stress fracture in his left foot. Ever since then he has been working to get back on the court to finish his career as he had dreamed of. We see that it is not easy due to reoccurring injuries and Covid.

Over the course of his career, Gasol played for many teams. While he was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers he came in contact with three very important people in his life – his wife Catherine McDonnell, teammate Kobe Bryant and coach Phil Jackson. This episode shows how he met McDonnell along with how she gave up her career to be a basketball player’s wife and how he dealt with the death of his friend and former teammate Bryant.

Episode 2 – We go back to the beginning here. After being drafted third overall and traded to the woeful Memphis Grizzlies, how Gasol became a star in the league. Subjects also covered are his relationship with Phil Jackson and the many surgeries he underwent over the course of his long career and how he played for a lot of teams – Grizzlies, Lakers, Chicago Bulls, San Antonio Spurs, and Milwaukee Bucks.

Episode 3 – Covid hits the world and Gasol’s plans to rehab after his latest injury/surgery are made more difficult. Still, he got himself into playing shape. In 2021 he signed with his boyhood team, FC Barcelona, to play one last season. In the stuff dreams are made of FC Barcelona wins the championship. He also played for Spain during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. On October 5, 2021, at the age of 41, Pau Gasol announced his retirement from professional basketball.

Episode 4 – As he is retiring he thinks of things like building a personal legacy, improving his golf game, managing his family commitments, and setting up his personal projects like his fight against childhood obesity and being a member of the IOC.
