Very rarely have popular Saturday Night Live characters translated to good films. A case of good only in small doses, I guess. Wayne’s World featuring the popular characters of Wayne and Garth brought to life by Mike Meyers and Dana Carvey was an exception. We are not talking Shakespeare here, but under the right circumstances, this is an enjoyable movie.
Directed by Penelope Spheeris, the film is filled with all the pop culture references you would expect. The big screen debut of Wayne and Garth delighted fans all over the world. First released in 1992, it did well enough at the box office that there was a Wayne’s World 2. Fan favourite is the perfect descriptor for it.
It was this film that really began Mike Meyers’s career as a lead actor in films. The success of Wayne’s World led to him being the lead actor in films like So I Married an Axe Murderer, the Austin Powers series, 54, and Shrek. Meyers forged a career, starting here, in indulging in hit or miss type humour. Laughs come fast and furious when this guy is involved.
For those not familiar with the characters, Wayne’s World tells the tale of two best buds, Wayne (played by Mike Meyers) and Garth (played by Dana Carvey), who are metal music fans and do a public access talk show from Wayne’s basement. The show makes enough of a mark that captures the attention of a big-time network executive, Benjamin Oliver (played by Rob Lowe). He approaches them with the offer of moving the show to his network. Production values are better there and Wayne falls for rock singer, Cassandra (played by Tia Carrere).
As good as this initially sounds to the two friends, it isn’t all that he makes it seem to be. Oliver is a rather sleazy guy and is just looking out for himself not the show. Plus he has his sights set on winning over Cassandra.
