They say it only takes one little candle to bring light to a big dark place.
Montreal’s Contact Theatre is staging a Pulitzer-prize winning rock musical about “finding light in darkness and finding love in the face of loss.” Next to Normal is its name, and it is running from May 6-14, 2022 at the Studio Hydro-Quebec at the Monument National Theatre.
I had the opportunity of interviewing the director Deborah Friedman and producer Ally Brumer. Since the show has not started yet, this is not a review of the play. Instead, this is an interview about how the production came together, the cast, stage, and technical challenges. More importantly, we discussed the message of the play and their goal in opening up conversations about this topic. We spoke about how far society has to travel because while the understanding of mental health challenges has improved, the stigma still exists. The interview is below:
