ACCLAIMED DEBUT ALBUM OUT NOW
Miki Ratsula has built a sizable audience by openly and honestly welcoming people into their world. The trans, nonbinary artist uses their platform to candidly document their life: from coming out to getting top surgery to their mental health journey. It’s the kind of storytelling that listeners, especially young queer kids, crave and deserve. On the heels of releasing their acclaimed debut album i owe it to myself this spring, they have announced a new gender neutral covers EP, made for them, due July 8 via Nettwerk. The project was co-produced by Miro Mackie (St. Vincent, Mallrat, KALI) and features covers of songs by Phoebe Bridgers, Harry Styles, One Direction, Angus & Julia Stone and Dodie.
“My cover of ‘she’ is the best example of what I was trying to do with the ‘made for them’ project,” notes Miki. “I just love this song by Dodie, a great queer artist, and what the song meant to me when I first heard it. On a personal level, transmasculine people who used to identify as female and also related to ‘she’ in their relationships might feel like they lost that connection to the song. By covering the song with gender neutral pronouns we can reclaim that. So for me, it is a literal response for this ‘made for them’”
made for them follows the March 2022 release of Miki’s debut album, i owe it to myself – an acoustic pop dream guided by Miki’s lush, lofi-inspired production that captures the full emotional seesaw that rocks between youth and adulthood. It’s a testament to self-love and a gift to anyone seeking the same, and sees Miki at their most vulnerable and fully realized. Their deeply intimate record touches on mental health, loss, love, and everything in between and the album’s singles received praise and playlisting by the likes of Billboard Pride, them., Under the Radar, PopMattersand more. The album’s singles include their ode to sweet love, “sugarcane,” and their raw, personal single “second” which deals with their fears and anxiety around getting top surgery last year.
Miki also wraps up her first national tour today in San Francisco. They have been on the road supporting friends Lauren Sanderson and Jordy, and just announced their June 25th Los Angeles headline show as part of withothers’ Concerts for Good. The event will support transgender & nonbinary youth via The Trevor Project. Miki will also announce their next run of shows soon! Look for those and more from the made for them EP in the coming weeks.
