Deep River Of Song (Bahamas 1935)
Various Artists / Rounder Universal
By Seema

This collection of songs is from the Bahamas in 1935. John A. Lomax worked with folk singers Zora Neale Hurston and Mary Elizabeth Barnicle in St-Simon's Island, Georgia, Eatonville and Florida. In Belle Glade, Lomax was determined to record Bahamian music and he did so by touring the markets that were filled with black and white migrant workers from all over the South. You will find twenty-nine tracks that are filled with significance and emotion. No instruments, no fancy recording studios or stunning voices. Just regular people with a desire to sing and share a part of their life with the listeners. Check out tracks like "Sail, Gal," "Oh Tilla," and "Congo Dance."
