Time Warner Music has compiled “The Ultimate Collection of Men in Music" into a two CD set.Featuring 32 songs, the collection covers 4 decades of music from Johnny Mathis' Chances Are to Jackson Browne's Somebody's Baby. Other artists featured include Louis Armstrong, Joe Cocker, Elton John, and Eric Clapton. Clearly these are just a few names that come to mind when trying to compile a list on how music has evolved throughout the years. This is a CD that anyone can enjoy and many of us grew up with these songs. Whether your musical preferences are Dean Martin or Rod Stewart, one must appreciate the wide range of music covered on this double album set. Without a doubt the artists covered on Music Men have played, or continue to play an important role in the development of today's music. All will enjoy this eclectic mix of music. Neil Young has been part of the music scene for over 30 years, covering folk, rock, techno and grunge. His latest release, a live CD, covering a mere eight songs from his 30 year career, takes us back to the days of old fashioned rock. Entitled "Road Rock, Neil Young Friends & Relatives", the title is self-explanatory. His relatives include his wife and sister singing back up as well as a strong accompaniment of musicians including Donald "Duck" Dunn on bass and Jim Keltner on drums and percussion who complete the Road Rock sound. For those people who associate the name Neil Young with songs like Heart of Gold or Old Man, they will find a whole new side of Neil Young as a hard rocking musician whose influences can still be heard in today's music. The songs covered on this CD are epics in their own rights. Highlights include an 18 minute Cowgirl in the Sand, the catchy Walk On, the under- appreciated Words which follows The Needle and the Damage Done on The Harvest album, and Motorcycle Mama, which displays the strong vocal qualities of Astrid and Pegi Young. The last song on the C.D. is Bob Dylan's classic All Along the Watchtower, which is joined by Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders who was on tour with him last summer. This C.D. has the songs and the sound to please all Neil Young fans, and anyone who enjoys his full range of musical flexibility. Put this C.D. on your Christmas wish list, and make it your New Year's resolution to listen to it often.

Elton John has just released a new CD that contains songs from one of his live performances from this past autumn. This wonderful new album was recorded at New York’s Madison Square Garden and has been rushed to stores, just in time for Christmas."One Night" is John’s 39th album release and if you’re a fan, you will certainly enjoy yet another greatest hits package with a nice mix of old and new.Elton’s voice still gives me that familiar shiver, memories from the days of old revisited. Elton brought back some old friends for this concert such as Kiki Dee who sang"Wherever She's Been" and reprised her role on "Don't Go Breaking My Heart".In addition, Brian Adams appeared on"Sad Songs". The top selling single of all time was also brought back, the original version of (not the version with the ode to Princess Diana) "Candle in the Wind" was performed flawlessly.This CD made me realize how enjoyable an Elton John concert can be.

On this, U2’s 12th CD release, we find the band in flux.Yes, the four lads from Ireland have taken a proverbial step backwards to a simpler and earthier sound that we became familiar with at the beginning of their careers in the mid-eighties. Finally, the band may have released what many fans might eventually consider to be their quintessential album.I can’t say enough about this new album; it exudes a sense of positively unheard of on any of their previous recordings.This album is refreshing and unassuming from beginning to end.It’s easy to listen to this one, over and over again, without getting bored. The first radio hit off the album, “Beautiful Day” is also the first track on the disc; it immediately sets the mood for what else will follow.It is pointless to continue mentioning all of my favorite songs on this disc.In my opinion this album ranks among the best pop albums of the year.Yes U2 are alive and well.Don’t walk, but run out and buy this one as soon as you can, it should not be missed.
Duets est une des bandes sonores les plus prometteuses de l’année. Fait assez curieux étant donné que le film est quasiment inconnu pour la plupart des gens. Quelle situation absurde! En effet, si on se fie à la qualité du disque, le long-métrage qui l’accompagne devrait être également à la hauteur d’affronter les méga-succès du business commercial. Cependant, il n’est apparu dans aucune salle de cinéma de Montréal. Il faut dire que c’est un vrai dommage, car la distribution compte plus d’un nom mondialement reconnu. Ainsi, la sensuelle Gwyneth Paltrow joue le rôle principal d’une chanteuse « karaoké ». Pour la bande sonore, le réalisateur Larry Klein a choisi d’utiliser tout simplement les acteurs pour interpréter les vieux classiques comme « Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) » d’Annie Lennox et David Stewart. Apparaissent sur l’enregistrement le renommé Babyface, Huey Lewis et Paul Giamatti. Les acteurs révèlent leurs talents de chanteurs souvent cachés pendant longtemps. Ainsi Gwyneth Paltrow nous livre une magnifique réédition du succès « Cruisin’ ». Personnellement, c’est avec plaisir que je redécouvre des mélodies parfois refoulées au fond de mes souvenirs, le tout avec la sensualité d’une actrice qui a du goût et un incontestable talent, que ce soit à l’écran ou sur la scène.
Comme sa musique, Nelly Furtado représente un savoureux mélange de plusieurs cultures. Cette Canadienne âgée d’à peine 21 ans est en effet issue d’une famille portugaise. Même si ses mélodies naissent du pop très moderne, son origine exotique est un élément qui l’influence considérablement. Pour un premier album de la jeune protagoniste, l’essai se montre très prometteur. Il y de tout pour satisfaire les jeunes de l’an 2000 : rythmes hip-hop, le son des tubes qui font fureur à l’heure actuelle, bref des mélodies dans le style du groupe TLC si populaire chez nos voisins des États-Unis. Bien entendu, la nouvelle technologie n’a pas été omise et les sons synthétisés par ordinateur nous surprennent plus d’une fois. Rempli de promesses, son album Whoa, Nelly! peut être tout de même rejeté par certains pour son semblant commercial. Cependant, si l’auditeur dépasse le stade de l’écoute unique et tend l’oreille, il se pourrait qu’il découvre des surprises aussi bien au niveau instrumental que vocal. Si ce n’est le mélange de l’anglais et du portugais, la diversité des styles musicaux sous-jacents est à remarquer, surtout que les chansons ont été composées par l’interprète même (qui a d’ailleurs été découverte grâce à son talent de tromboniste dans le groupe jazz de son lycée).
Ayant choisi leur nom d’après une marque ancienne de sucreries aux arachides, les Squirrel Nut Zippers n’essaient pas de faire des hommages aux grands noms de l’histoire de la musique. Leur but n’est pas de se reposer sur leurs lauriers (qu’ils ont obtenus notamment grâce à leur album-succès international Hot en 1997). Leur intention n’est pas non plus de se cacher sous une fausse nostalgie qu’on retrouve si souvent chez les artistes contemporains. Quel est donc leur motif si secret? En fait, ils veulent tout simplement s’amuser à fond, faire les fous, inviter les fantômes du passé à reconstruire la fête perpétuelle de ce style des années 20 qu’ils appellent très à propos « Hot Music ». Une chose est sûre : jamais vous ne pourrez vous ennuyer avec cette bande de petits diables. Sans le vouloir, votre corps sera secoué par leurs nouveaux rythmes plus rapides, plus « sexy » (comme les qualifie la chanteuse du groupe), plus excentriques que jamais de leur Swing rénové. Leur carrière fructueuse a débuté en 1995, lors de la sortie de leur premier album The Inevitable. Le plus récent, Bedlam Ballroom, comporte treize chansons qui ne manqueront pas de vous remonter le moral. On sent une évolution depuis ces cinq dernières années, mais elle est décidément positive. Pour les amateurs de dessins animés du début du siècle aussi bien que pour les fêtards modernes, les Squirrel Nut Zippers se sont cette fois-ci dépassés.
Capable Egg

C’est trop bizarre! Décidément, on n’arrive pas à empêcher ces mots de nous venir à l’esprit lors du premier abord de Lullaby Baxter Trio. Même le titre Capable Egg (Œuf capable) paraît vraiment singulier. Sans aucun doute, la chanteuse montréalaise a-t-elle découvert un nouveau style musical mais il est difficile de le classer où que ce soit justement pour cette raison. On se trouve transportés dans un conte de fées avec des mélodies de carrousel, le tout pointé de sublimes touches d’accordéon. Il est difficile de dire si l’artiste se moque ou est sérieuse, mais la joie se fait sentir indiscutablement sur chacune des douze pièces de l’album. Faisant appel au banjo, Baxter a aussi ajouté du traditionnel. Comment décrire ce son? On pourrait presque se croire à la ferme de l’ouest profond, dans la nature, avec des bruits d’animaux, le country qui se fait entendre par la porte entrouverte de la taverne voisine, bref un sentiment qui est quasiment inconnu aux internautes de l’aube du vingt et unième siècle. Mes tentatives sont vaines. Je n’arrive pas à définir ce phénomène au bord de l’imagination.
