The old master Mr. Louis Armstrong lets loose with a number of superb Dixieland tunes on this traditional compilation of some of the sweetestsounds this side of the Mississippi.Listening to this CD will evoke the feeling of New Orleans as it was back in the 1920's and '30's. Peanuts Hucko has some great riffs on “Basin Street Blues”. The album includes tracks such as “Weary Blues", recorded in 1927 in Chicago and "Mahogany Hall Stomp" recorded in 1936 in New York City. Also included is a traditional Funeral March number, "New Orleans Function: Flee as a Bird / Oh,Didn't He Ramble" and a traditional version of "When the Saints Go Marching In". Louis Armstrong’s genius makes him stand alone as the single most important jazz musician of all time. So much of today’s music can trace its roots and influences back to Armstrong. For those of you particular to the original recordings, this record is a must.Some surface noise is audible on thisalbum, however the tracks still sound great considering they were transferred from various early recordings. All in all this CD is a sound investment for any serious jazz collection.

« Blind Faith? Non, ce nom ne me dit rien de particulier. », pensais-je il y a quelques jours. Faisant partie de la « Génération X », il n’est pas surprenant que ma culture musicale soit assez restreinte. Cependant, lorsque je sus que c’était en fait l’un des premiers groupes d’Eric Clapton, il y a eu un déclic. Cet album double est en effet une réédition de l’une des œuvres les plus acclamées du célèbre guitariste. L’original a été mis sur le marché à la fin des années soixante, mais cette nouvelle version comporte en plus quelques surprises inédites. L’auditeur accro du mouvement « hippie » se délectera à plusieurs morceaux plus ou moins psychédéliques comme « Do What You Like », « Acoustic Jam » et « Time Winds ». Le tout est bien enveloppé dans un blues solide, signature très personnelle de Clapton. Grâce à l’aide de Steve Winwood, Ginger Baker et Rick Grech, il nous ramène les douces mélodies des guitares acoustiques, bref la musique remplie de l’espoir parfois aveugle de la jeune génération « Peace & Love » (d’où d’ailleurs le nom de Blind Faith). Je vous recommande fortement d’écouter la chanson « Can’t Find My Way Home » qui m’a vraiment émue avec sa profondeur mais aussi sa simplicité.

Their album is full of lush lyrics, swirling melodies and strong choruses.One of my favorites tracks on the CD, Breathing creates a beautiful sound with a molasses flow of words, rich and smooth.The strength of this album is it’s sound, reminiscent of currently favoured groups tempered with enough originality to make the listener want to hear more.All of these songs meld together in a smooth progression from one to the next, invariably with guitars singing in the background and low clear vocals in the foreground.An all around enjoyable CD, it gives the feel that one is sitting in a busy coffeehouse sipping strong black coffee, watching the people go by, and contemplating life.Listen to this disc and watch the world go by.

This group's assemblage of heavyweight musicians is led by percussionist Manny Oquendo and bassist Andy Gonzalez. This album offers tasteful and up lifliting rearrangement of new versions of old unfinished songs. The group has called themselves "Libre", referring to freedom in Spanish. Pay close attention to the lead vocals of Jorge Maldonado and the strong guitar work of Octavio Kotan,; the two add a happy and youthful sound to the mix. However, it might be of interest to note that special guest singer Xiomara Lougart does quite a nice job in Quiereme Y Veras, adding a slow, sensual, romantic, and slick southern touch. All of the seven tracks really stand out, they are all blessed with an overwhelming passion. Enjoy dancing? This CD will really stir things up; so go ahead and dance the night away.
Jazz guitarist extraordinaire John Scofield, along with the legendary accompaniment of drummer Billy Higgins, alto saxophonist Kenny Garret, pianist Brad Mehldau, and bassist Christian Mcbride are in fine form on this wonderful CD. Featuring eleven contemporary selections that combine superior musicianship coupled with an almost extra-sensory like communication. I’ll Catch You, the album’s opening track starts out with an intriguing bass riff, slowly and progressively joined by a few snares, some beautiful keyboard chords, and finally a powerful melodious blow with the sax to round it all off. Each voice comes together perfectly. There is much talk about vamps – the repetitive rhythmic figures that musicians solo over - as the key to the exercise. Alone, they can be mundane, but in the right band, they can be much deeper. Whether you’re looking for an explosive song like Loose Cannon or Do I Crazy? or if you just want to relax to gentle jazz in the background, "works for me" is definitely not to be missed.

This inspired new effort demonstrates Dara’s influences from various different cultures from around the world. Dara was destined to perform, however he quit college in 1959 because he wasn’t recognized as being musically refined enough. He then traveled the world while enrolled in the U.S. Marines. Every place he visited; the Caribbean, Europe, Africa - led him to discover new styles of music that he eventually incorporated into his own style. After leaving the marines Dara wound up in New York City. Once in the “Big Apple” Dara became entrenched in the local jazz scene. Neighborhoods features songs about Olu Dara’s earliest memories as a child growing up in rural Mississippi, coupled with what his life is currently about. His musical depictions are a mix of groovy, light-hearted rhythms and well-defined notes. Several of the pieces appearing on this album have been written spontaneously, on the spot. Appearing on Neighborhoods is acclaimed keyboardist, Dr. John who performs on four out of the eleven tracks. Also making an appearance is Cassandra Wilson who joins Dara for a duet called Used To Be. Olu continues to convey the heart and soul of the southern states in his music; combining aspects from a past society’s quest for freedom and his own personal views on flux in the 21st century.

Fisher is a true singer songwriter, bringing into her songs themes such as the pursuit of fame, fear, independence and love. The title of the album is at first reminiscent of wilderness and northern life, but in fact the song True North is about love. in a slow pulsing song filled with vocals and a spare backup Fisher sings “no one could love you more, my true north”. This style sets the tone for the whole CD, as emotion filled songs whirl around and crash over you like waves in a storm blue sea. An exceptionally impressive song is Miseryland, accompanied by a trotting beat which details how “I don’t wanna go for a ride down to miseryland trapped with you”. This collection of songs is worth listening to more than once. I really enjoyed Fisher’s sound and her often insightful, sometimes painfully honest lyrics pushing through her songs .

At just 24 years of age Eliza Carthy makes her major label debut with Angels and Cigarettes, her previous critically acclaimed independent album was released in 1998. Singer songwriter, Carthy has a gift for expressing the personal side of her life through her songs, intertwining folk with modern music. This CD is a light mixing of strong whimsical lyrics, a gentle voice and lilting violin music. Songs of note are the forthcoming single Whole, and Beautiful Girl. Whole is a wonderful tribute to love and the trials and desires it brings. The music and singing wrap the listener up in a gossamer of sound, light but substantial. The fast paced musical score of Beautiful Girl expresses the torment and envy of trying to meet societal expectations of feminine beauty. Definitely a CD to listen to, enjoy its relaxing qualities and thought provoking lyrics.

There is no denying that “Rod The Mod” Stewart has made his mark as a hopeless romantic. From the flamenco tinged first track (Human; Slash lends a helping hand on this track) to the last (I Can’t Deny It, which is the disc’s first hit), Stewart’s music brings motivation, hope, and all sorts of other emotions to the listener. Check out Macy Gray’s compositionSmitten; Stewart steps up and makes it sound like his own. Stewart’s jazzy style is frequently intertwined with a more modern R&B sound on this album. A perfect example of this new style can be found on the roots / reggae infused song If I Had You (was Rod listening to a few Marley albums before writing this one?) which includes the contribution of Dire Straits guitarist Mark knofler . Stewart comments that his “favorite song on the album is probably It Was Love That We Needed , Curtis Mayfield sang this one when he was laying on his back in a hospital after his terrible accident.” This CD really grows on you, after a few listenings you’ll probably start humming along with Rod. If you are a Rod Stewart fan you will undoubtedly enjoy this new offering.

Charlie Parker a souvent été comparé à Louis Armstrong, car leurs influences s’étendaient bien au-delà de leur propre instrument. Sa carrière a été plutôt éphémère, mais l’impact qu’il a eu se fait encore sentir chez les musiciens vieux et jeunes d’aujourd’hui. Parker a grandi à Kansas City, milieu très propice pour un talent en développement. D’excellents groupes et des musiciens de prestige l’entouraient et lui ont servi de modèles lors de son apprentissage. Comme chacun de nous le sait, le génie est constitué d’un pour cent de talent exceptionnel et de quatre-vingt-dix-neuf pour cent de dur labeur. Parker a appris cela à ses dépens, mais ça ne la pas découragé. Chaque jour, il s’exerçait au moins pendant onze heures, sa pratique pouvant aller jusqu’à quinze heures d’affilée. En moins d’une décennie, Charlie Parker a su établir les bases solides du nouveau style connu sous les noms de « Rebop, Bebop, Bop » et sous celui plus simple du « Jazz moderne ».

Né Colin James Munn en 1964 à Regina au Saskatchewan, voilà un Canadien qui a su se hisser au rang des grands noms du blues d’aujourd’hui. Amorçant sa carrière de musicien dès l’âge de 16, même à l’époque il savait qu’un avenir prometteur l’attendait. Vers 1986, lors d’un petit spectacle qu’il donnait, Colin James impressionna un agent de la compagnie de disques Virgin en dansant littéralement sur sa table et c’est ainsi qu’il obtint son premier vrai contrat. Même si de nombreuses années sont passées depuis lors, le chanteur/compositeur/guitariste réussit à nous accrocher aussi bien dès la première écoute. Son sixième album Fuse possède un attrait inexplicable et irrésistible. De plus, il ne faut pas omettre de dire que Colin James a retenu l’attention de la scène musicale à tel point que le producteur des fameux Z.Z. Top Joe Hardy a décidé de travailler avec lui. Le résultat est plusieurs solos bien placés, une voix un peu râpeuse mais qui a son charme, le tout enveloppé dans des rythmes vivants et joyeux. D’ailleurs, on pourrait comparer Colin James au jeune Johnny Lang. Les deux ont en effet commencé à jouer très tôt et ils partagent un même amour pour le blues. Enfin, les deux musiciens ont opté pour la guitare et leurs succès sont aussi retentissants au Canada qu’aux États-Unis.

Cet album m’a vraiment coupé le souffle! Dès la première chanson, quelque chose tout au fond de moi m’a chuchoté que Razmatazne serait pas un album comme les autres. Paolo Conte étant un musicien de jazz, je m’attendais justement à un disque… eh bien jazz, quoi! Mais non! Il y a de l’opéra, des chansonnettes sorties tout droit du Moulin rouge, de la meringue, bref tout un boucan, mais incroyablement beau. Il est difficile en effet d’imaginer qu’un seul homme ait pu composer des chansons d’une telle diversité une atmosphère unique qui nous transporte à travers une multitude d’époques et de lieux. Il est intéressant de remarquer que tous les morceaux (à part le dernier) sont relativement très courts. Ainsi, juste au moment où on est envoûté totalement, la chanson se termine. Bref, nous sommes toujours laissés sur notre faim. De plus, la dernière chanson « Mozambique Fantasy » serait une ouverture (comme indiqué entre parenthèses à côté du titre), ce qui laisse un sentiment plaisant de contradiction. Si vous n’avez le temps d’écouter qu’une chanson de l’album, choisissez « La Java Javanaise »; vous ne pourrez pas être déçus.

Il y a une vingtaine d’années, Eithne Ni Bhraonain s’est jointe au groupe de ses frères, sœurs et quelques oncles appelé Clannad (famille). Cependant, lorsque les musiciens se sont dirigés vers le pop des années 80, la jeune chanteuse a préféré tenter la chance de son côté. Ainsi, l’histoire a commencé au fin fond de l’Irlande, mais le phénomène Enya s’est rapidement étendu sur toute la planète. En 1988, après de nombreux efforts, son talent a été enfin reconnu grâce au succès « Orinoco Flow » extrait de son second album solo Watermark. Aujourd’hui, après avoir grimpé à maintes reprises au sommet des palmarès avec plusieurs de ses œuvres, Enya nous présente le plus récent fruit de sa longue carrière : A day without rain. Peu sont ceux qui ne connaissent pas son mélange de folk et de musique celte. Malgré qu’elle soit classée la plupart du temps dans la catégorie New Age, elle apparaît être plutôt une compositrice classique. Attention les oreilles délicates, c’est ce qu’il vous faut : pas de guitares grinçantes, pas de surprises tordues, tout simplement quelques violons et une demie-douzaine d’instruments extra-terrestres… Qu’est-ce que c’est que ça? Eh bien, ne vous affolez pas, il s’agit d’une plaisante balade aux confins de l’univers, bien dans la tradition d’Enya et apportant du repos aux esprits tourmentés.

Dernièrement, les amateurs de jazz et bossa-nova doivent se trouver certainement au septième ciel. On assiste en effet à une véritable explosion de rééditions d’albums enregistrés dans les années soixante. Ces rythmes qui ont tant de mérite sont enfin en train de renaître autant pour le plaisir des connaisseurs que de ceux qui viennent à peine de les découvrir. Ainsi, même si Carnavals a été enregistré il y a presque quarante ans, les mélodies s’adaptent à merveille à un café à la fine pointe de la technologie, peuplé d’internautes, scrutant les écrans des ordinateurs et sirotant un latté bien chaud. Malgré le fait que cet album ait été composé par le brésilien João Donato, le principal mérite est attribué au génie du vibraphone Dave Pike qui en fait un trésor à part. En fait, avant l’enregistrement, chacun des musiciens n’avait qu’une ébauche imprécise des lignes majeures de l’ensemble et Carnavals est donc presque entièrement une longue suite d’improvisations. Sur cet album, Pike explore avec succès des mélodies des Caraïbes, tout en intégrant ce calypso populaire à un jazz très avant-gardiste. Les héritages du swing new-yorkais se font aussi sentir, le tout dans un rythme simple, ponctué par l’incroyable génie à peine âgé d’une vingtaine d’années. Ce dernier, malgré les barrières évidentes de son instrument, réussit à en tirer une saveur nouvelle, nous donnant le goût de sourire et danser même lorsqu’une tempête de neige fait rage dehors.

Of course this CD sparkles with romance.Most of the selections on this disc derive from jazz standards dating back to the nineteen forties and fifties, however John Pizzarelli penned the fourth song on the CD called All I Saw Was You.Pizzarelli’s wife, JessicaMolaskey collaborated on two of the compositions with him as well, these include, Lucky Charm and Da Vinci’s Eyes.A couple of the standards included on this disc are Irving Berlin’s, I’m Putting All My Eggs In One Basket and Benny Goodman’s Stompin’ at the Savoy.This CD boasts fifteen selections that will surely convey romantic messages to the ones we love.

Le chanteur Ed Roland, compositeur de toutes les chansons sur l’album, nous montre plus qu’efficacement que les paroles ne doivent pas être forcément très profondes et mystiques. Elles peuvent tout aussi bien rester simples, directes, sans devenir pour autant ennuyeuses. En effet, la véritable essence de Blender réside plutôt dans la musique. La plupart des noms des chansons n’étant constitués que d’un seul mot (« Skin », « Happiness », « Boast » etc.), elles nous rappellent l’énergie essentielle et sans excuses du rock classique à la AC/DC ou U2. Pour Collective Soul, les guitares électriques existent pour être utilisées à fond et non pas admirées par des collectionneurs qui les mettraient dans une vitrine. Ainsi, il n’est pas étonnant qu’elles prédominent sur l’ensemble des compositions. La voix du chanteur, balancée et dynamique, prend le rôle d’un sixième instrument et complète les talents des autres membres du groupe. Blender étant leur cinquième album, il n’est pas étonnant qu’ils aient acquis une expérience suffisante pour se permettre de collaborer avec des noms comme Shawn Mullins (dont la voix constitue l’introduction de « Vent ») et Sir Elton John (qui apparaît sur « Perfect Day »).

À la fois vulnérable et forte, Erikah Badu emprunte le rôle d’une « guerrière » (comme l’indiquent les paroles et les notes adjacentes aux chansons) pour son second album solo. Ayant grandi au son de la musique soul des années 60 et 70 à Memphis, elle s’en est largement inspirée. Mama’s Gun est un disque à écouter pour relaxer, mais n’ayez pas peur, il est loin d’être ennuyeux au point de s’endormir. Le but de la chanteuse serait plutôt de faire revivre la musique d’ambiance sans gadgets électroniques, des sons hors du temps. Bien entendu, le jazz y est exploité largement, surtout sur le dernier morceau « Green Eyes » qui semble carrément enregistré dans les années vingt. Cependant, la chanson la plus remarquable et originale est sans doute « Penitentiary Philosophy » qui accroche l’auditeur dès la première écoute. Ceci pourrait s’expliquer par son opposition par rapport à la quantité de R&B ultra-commercial qui nous entoure. Cette chanson possède à la fois un rythme vif et moderne, mais n’a pas l’air aussi faussement prétentieux que le son de Destiny’s Child ou TLC, pour ne pas en citer d’autres. Bref, un produit anti-commercial qui se digère pourtant plus que bien.
