Born
Bond  / Universal
Joe Gordon
Lookin’ Good
By Sheldon
Joe Gordon was born in Boston, MA. Thisrelatively unknown artist died in his prime (1928-1963) in virtual anonymity. However, gifted jazz musicians such as Charlie “the Bird” Parker, DizzyGillespie, Thelonious Monk, and Shelly Manne held Gordon in high regard and asked him to sit in on a few treasured recordings. Recorded in July 1961, this recently re-released CD was Gordon’s second recording, each song is mentioned indetail on the CD’s insert jacket. Gordon painstakingly explained not only what each song was about but also who the songs were dedicated to. Gordon also depicted the inherent musical theory and chord structure behind each selection; something rarely if ever seen these days. Joe and the other fine members of this bandplayedan upbeat tempo jazz, combined with some great improvisations that I really enjoyed.Check out Non-Viennese Waltz Blues and You’re The Only Girl In The Next World For Me to get a feeling of what this master was all about.
Joshua Redman Quartet
Time Passages
By Sheldon
The design imprinted on the compact disc of Joshua Redman’snewest CD release is a Roman numeral clock which compliments histen year anniversary as a professional musician.Redman sees jazz as “art in general as this unfolding process of a constant search and adventure.'' At Redman’s recent Montreal concert the audience was treatedto a few parts of the bands upcoming CD, Time Passages. Joshua RedmanisJoined by Aaron Goldberg (Piano), Reuben Rogers (bass) and Gregory Hutchinson (drums) they help him combine his style of free form jazz, funk and rhythm and blues on this brilliantCD.Redman describes his musical selections as journeys “… apiece of music that sayssomething from start to finish” and “I see this piece as a journey that takes place “ Some of the journeys Redman is referring to are the musical interactions with the other members of the band.Sometimes, two way, three way and four way. Free Speech Bronze and Time Were are among my favoritesongs on the album. To read more about Redman’s most recent concert in Montreal go to the following URL.
Joshua Redman Quartet Review
Acoustic Soul
India.Arie /  Motown

King Cobb Steelie / Ryko Palm
By Cat
This Juno-nominated Guelph-sprung band broke out in the college circuit in 1992. King Cobb Steelie is comprised of Kevan Byrne (vocals, guitar), Kevin Lynn (bass) and Michael Armstrong (percussion).“Steelie” has imported some choice Toronto talent to expand their various funk, rock and electronica grooves. Vocalists Michelle McAdorey and Tamara Williamson balance out the upper register, sliding seamlessly through Steelie’sthought-provoking lyrics. Scratching just over your shoulder is DJ Serious (the one and only), in keeping with this disc’s hip hop and dub influences. Meanwhile, the album’s crispy, plugged-in acoustic prowess is preserved even among the cool and well-placed special sound effects, including Eric Chenaux’s bowed guitar and Producer/Engineer Guy Fixsen on the moog keyboard. Mayday, the trio’s latest release and inaugural alliance with Ryko is daring and brilliant. King Cobb Steelie’s fine array of ever-evolving adventures in sound and music will surely satisfy any music lover’s search for original and fresh tunes.
Kombo
Cookin’ Out / Verve
By Sheldon
Cookin’ out is Kombo’s second release on the Verve label. Thisfunky retro duo really gel on this album. I loved there version of War’s classic “Low Rider” Featuring Ron Pedley on acoustic piano, muted trumpet and organ and Jon Pondel on electric and acoustic guitars. Kombo also recruited some old and new friends to help out. Drummer SteveFerrone, who has played with, Tom Petty, , and EricClapton, Percussionist Luis Conte is “alegend really,” says Pedley. “He’s played with Madonna,Diana Ross, Pat Metheny Group, Ricky Martin. Singer Sharon Hendrix sings on two tracks of this mostly instrumental CD andhas done session work with Bob Dylan.“We’re looking forward to trying‘Low Rider’ out live,” Pedley says. “It’s a jam band thing, sort of Grateful Dead-ish, with a contemporary jazz edge toit.” Upon completion of Cookin out, the duo received praisefrom The Verve Music Group’s Chairman Tommy LiPumaand President Ron Goldstein.Try this funky CD and you wont be disappointed.
The Prestige Jazz Quartet
Prestige Records
By Sheldon
Although, the Prestige Jazz Quartetwas solely intended to be a studio quartet they did however make an exception on June 22, 1957 when they recorded this sensational live album in Hackensack, NJ. This fine recording featuresTeddy Charles (vibes),Mal Waldron (piano), Addison Farmer (bass) and Jerry Segal (drums). You will only find four tracks on this blissful Jazz infused CD. The opening number is a three-sectional piece; the medium paced “Route 4” (recorded again later by John Coltrane), the slow and solo entrenched “Lyriste”, the last part“Father George” isthe most upbeat selection among the three pieces.Short for metamorphosis waltz, Waldron’sMeta-Waltz is the second track on this disk; listen formedium paced solos from all four players. Track three, is a dreamy ballad dedicated to Waldron’s wife Elaine (“Dear Elaine”); the song is built on a two-note motif which approximates the two syllables of her name. “Friday the 13th”is the closer and again listen to those great solos, wow. This is a great CD and a must for any musical aficionado. Throw this disc on and put on your headphones and just lay back, relax and smile.

Shoulda Been Home
Robert Cray / Rykodisc
One Night At McCool's
Soundtrack / Universal
By Yorg
This CD is the soundtrack companion to the film; included on the roster is Liv Tyler, Matt Dillon, John Goodman, Paul Reiser and Michael Douglas, I can’t wait to see this film. This mix of everyone’s favorite songs includes twelve tracks to dance or sway to. Some of the compositions were written within the last year while others such as the Village People’s,YMCA was recorded in 1978.Some of my favorite tracks include Joan Osborne’s remake of  Love is Alive, wow, this one sounds completely different than the original. I also enjoyed Butterfly’s, Got 2 B Luv and Morcheeba’s Love Is Rare.Making a rare appearance on this disc is Wanted Man written by Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, this oft forgotten gem is performed by the man in black himself, Johnny Cash. The eclectic mix of songs are masterfully arranged and bound to please most musical tastes. Throw this CD on when you’re with a bunch of friends; they will enjoy this mix of oldies and newbies to dance or just relax to.

Dedication
The Tenor Giants Featuring Oscar Peterson
Zoot Sims And Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis / Fantasy
By Geneviève
Spotlighting Zoot Sims and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis on tenor saxophones, along with Oscar Peterson, Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson and Louis Bellson, The Tenor Giants–Featuring Oscar Peterson was originally recorded at a performance during a 1975 tour of Europe. Opening to a swinging 1924 composition, "The man I love", this lively album includes a mix of high-spirited tunes and smooth, short ballads. The Sims/Davis tenor "dialogue" is full of life, and Peterson's rich piano performance is a delight to listen to. Look for an upbeat rendition of the 1942 jazzy favorite "There will Never be Another You", featuring a full-fledged solo by Davis. The music of "The Tenor Giants" evokes mental pictures of exciting nightclubs and enticing tête-à-têtes, with an undertone of zesty humor. This is an album that everyone will enjoy, whether they are true jazz aficionados or simple music lovers, as I am. Heartfelt and sassy, this music will make you feel like dancing (I am moving to the rhythms of "Out of Nowhere" in front of my computer, as I am writing this) and will leave you with a smile on your face.
Cousteau
Cousteau / Ryko Palm
Ella Sings Broadway
Ella Fitzgerald / Verve
By Cat
Ouch! What could be better than original cast recordings of Broadway classics on old vinyl? Easy…Ella Fitzgerald’s latest re-release on CD, Ella Sings Broadway! Enjoy Ella’s wonderful take on Broadway favourites on this twelve-song collection includes classics such as Rogers & Hammerstein’s Dites-moi and I Could Have Danced All Night of My Fair Lady fame. Personally, my favourite thing about this album is the way this first lady of jazz caresses the corners of Frank Loesser’s tunes (If I Were a Bell, Warm All Over, Guys and Dolls, Somebody Somewhere). With fine arrangements (and conducting) by Norman Granz, this album (originally recorded over a 3-day period in 1962) marked a sidestep from Ella’s usual style. Nonetheless, you feel her swing and can’t help but be seduced by her quintessential mastery of vocal smoothness. Having selected the tunes herself, Ella Fitzgerald gets right inside each word and each note, and you feel her excitement about the music that she sings. She always gets what she wants. But then again, that’s Ella.
Viva! Vaughan
Sarah Vaughan / Verve
By Cat
Remember this one? This new CD re-issue was originally recorded in the summer of ’64, when the Brazilian samba pattern was in high style. Sarah Vaughan’s flexible voice spreads beautifully and effortlessly over this fusion of latin and jazz. No surprise, as this enduring jazz icon can simply do no wrong. Her thirteen-song collection starts with Top 5 hit (1964) The Girl From Ipanema, and includes Sarah Vaughan’s signature Fever, plus other tasty selections as Tea For Two and A Taste of Honey. Alongside Vaughan are a number of breathtaking instrumentalists such as Britt Woodman (trombone), Jerome Richardson (flute) and Harry Lookofsky (tenor violin) to name just a few. This album is quite an earful; intricate Latin percussions, a full horn section and, of course, Sarah Vaughan’s fearless vocals take us on a hip-shakin’ detour through South America, Sarah-style. Viva Vaughan!

Make It Rain
Michael Burks / Warner Music
By Sheldon
Born in 1957 and blessed with a really deep bluesy voice, Michael is a relatively young player on the blues circuit. With his  vintage Flying V  Gibson guitar he  sings and wails the blues. Michael Burks absorbs himself into his guitar playing.  Incidentally, Michael’s father and grandfather were also blues musicians.  His father had the young prodigy playing the guitar at the age of two. Michael made his first night club debut at age 6 in his family’s hometown of Camden, Arkansas. They called him “the little Midget” because ofthe unbelievable guitar leads this young person was playing. Make it Rain is the first CD that Burks has made on Alligator Records. This CD is laced with countless guitar solos that will blow you away. I have enjoyed every track on this disc. So, if you’re looking to discover some innovative blues, Michael Burks’ Make it Rain might just be right up your alley.

Reptile
Eric Clapton / Warner Music
By Sheldon

The term Reptile is a slang word commonly used in Eric Clapton’s home town of Ripley,England,  as a term of endearment and a sign of great respect and recognition. Theartwork for this CD is dedicated to the many “reptiles” Clapton has met during his travels. Primarily however, Reptile is dedicated to Clapton’s Uncle Adrian who recently passed away and with whom he spent a great deal of his childhood. “I realize now that most of my tastes in music, art, clothes, and cars were formed in this period of my life.” Two instrumental tracks bookend a magnificent assortment of covers by Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, James Taylor and JJ Cale; of course some original Clapton tracks are also tossed into the mix. This extraordinary CD’s solitary underprovided components are Clapton’s trademark extended guitar solos.  Eric Clapton is in fine form asalways; it’s been a pleasure once again to listen toSlowhand’s newest masterpiece.
