Seal’s career has lasted over 20 years! Where does the time go?  It seems like just yesterday (actually it was 1991) that I was listening to his version of “Killer” and wondering who was the man behind this whiskey-aged, raspy voice.  Now he has four Grammy Awards, has sold almost 30 million albums, is married to super model Heidi Klum, and is a father of four (three biological).  I ask again, where does the time go?  Seal seems to not be so concerned with the passage of time.  He is even brave enough to repetitively keep dipping into the past for songs to remake.  In 2008 he released his sixth studio album called Soul and it contained covers of songs like “A Change is Gonna Come” and “I Can’t Stand the Rain”.  The album was hugely popular, especially over in Europe.  One good turn deserves another and so three years later Seal is releasing Soul 2. As the title would lead you to know, Soul 2 is filled with covers of classic soul songs. This time you get his versions of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together”, Bill Withers’ “Lean On Me” and Smokey Robinson’s “Ooh Baby Baby” amongst others.  Once again the album was co-produced by David Foster and this time he is joined by long-time Seal collaborator Trevor Horn.  You can hear Horn and Foster’s influences in the lush arrangements. What has always been true about Seal, no matter what song he is singing, is that distinctive voice.  He has also wisely chosen songs that suit his voice. Most of the songs he has chosen are from the 1970s and he generally remains faithful to the originals. There are very few surprises on the album, but it all is rather good anyway.
