Lights is an act that you cannot help but like. She is so genuine in everything she does. Her sophomore album sheds light (ooh! A pun!) on a young (she’s 24) artist who is trying to evolve and grow while still remaining firmly within the pop music genre. Now, I have to qualify that last statement. Yes, her music is pop and is a very melodic version of pop music, but you will also hear influences from dubstep and electronic music in her songs. All of her music really keys in on the melodies and creating catchy riffs through the use (primarily) of keyboards. Some of her sound experiments involve other artists. Rapper Shad shows up on the track “Flux and Flow” and Canadian band Holy Fuck co-produced the album. The lyrics, sung by her vulnerable/young girl vocals, are filled with emotions. Though she did use plenty of auto tune on her debut, Lights really dials back on her sophomore album and on the track “Flux and Flow” really shows you what she is capable of vocally. The lead single is the track called “Toes” and it is so catchy that you’ll find yourself singing the “oh, you captured my attention” part over and over for weeks. One of my favourite overall album releases of 2011.
